And so the story deepens and divides.

Mikayla’s body was found along the sharp bend in the yellow path approaching Berry Acres.

On one side of the argument are the good people of Hopkinton, MA. On the other side, a grieving Black mother, her only daughter found dead, hanging from a tree, less than a half mile from their home.

Hopkinton residents, many of whom are white, would like to reserve judgement until police and detectives finish their work. According to many, the police must be trusted to do their job if justice is to prevail.

Calvina Strothers, the mother of Mikayla Miller, the 16 year old Black girl found hanging from a tree near her home, thinks otherwise. She thinks her daughter was lynched. And like any mother who believes she has inexplicably lost a child to a violent act, Strothers doesn’t want to wait months for an answer. Straight up, she doesn’t trust the Hopkinton Police, or the District Attorney handling the case.

Violence is rare in this predominately white community in Eastern Massachusetts. It’s the reason why many chose to live here. Some families have lived in Hopkinton for generations.

That makes the recent death of Mikayla Miller, and the curious manner by which she died, a very, very big deal. This sort…
